Trial - Finale Grande in Gressenich

Ian Hannam reports from the final rounds
Sidecar Trial Europa Cup
The British tour for the last 3 rounds of Europa Cup 2009 started on Thursday evening with the boat Dover / Calais. Friday we travelled onto Holland, where at the Hooge Veluwe campsite we met and secured our pitch with the rest of the British contingent.
Saturday morning we were greeted by fog and a steady 2 mile ride to the 27th Plonkers Pleasure Trial start area. This is a MX track and the sections are laid out in the holes left behind where the sand has been taken to make the jumps on the track. This year did not seem so testing as other years but perhaps we are all getting used to riding sand. Neil & Pete needed a win over Benoit & Belinda in the modern class which they duly secured and Ian & Deborah outclassed Paul & Deb but the Pre 65 championship was already decided barring a major disaster for Paul with Ian missing France. Low scores over both Saturday and Sundays trials meant any mistake could not be regained but with beer and good food the British were on holiday.
Leaving the camping ground on Monday, Paul, Deb, Pete, Murry & Deb all went South to the Mosel & Rhine areas for a few days while Ian, Neil & Alan went straight to Gressenich, where we took in the newly revamped Nürburg Ring on Tuesday, a lot of changes and a big museum since I was last there in 2000.
We all met up again on Friday at Gressenich where we had a practice afternoon in preparation for the last Europa Cup round set by Axel. The Pre 65 course was testing to look at but as Axel says "Use your eyes" The modern route was exciting with some massive steps. A poor turnout of crews for the last round but those that did attend enjoyed the event.
Neil & Pete kept up their form to secure and retain the 2009 championship as did Paul & Deb,. Many Congratulations to both teams. Ian & Deborah took 2nd & Alan & James 6th, final positions at www.hw-bauss.de
Saturday night as usual is presentation, a good drink and dancing to the ever popular Phil and his magic music boxes, with an early Sunday morning finish. Neil & Pete kept up their form to secure and retain the 2009 championship as did Paul & Deb. Many Congratulations to both teams.
Sunday was a "Let your hair down" trial so Neil & Pete swapped roles and rode the middle route as did Ian & Deborah who rode the easy route and an admiral job she did with 2 clean laps (should have been 3 but had a passenger error!!!!).
Yet again a very enjoyable championship riding in Europe with very nice friendly competitors and organizers, more crews should get involved and enjoy the experience as we hope to in 2010. Some new venues are being talked about and the British round at Chalford, Stroud will be 3/4 July.
